How to find a good Mechanic
New in town? Had a bad experience? Car now out of warranty? Your mechanic not available? Just got your first car? Something wrong with the car?
OK, for what ever reason, you need a good Mechanic.
How do you find one?
Normally, of course, you’d ask your Mum. She would probably say “ask your Father” and now you are no better off. However, you are on the right track – ask around of those people you trust. It doesn’t matter if they are not mechanically savvy. You want to know about the experiences people have had with various Mechanics. You will then weigh up that info and try first the one who sounds the best and who has the most convenient location. A good start! You will then judge from your own experiences.
Other sources of advice are the State motoring bodies, e.g. RAC, NRMA; and the local business associations or chamber of commerce.
How do you know if you’ve got a good one?
Ask yourself the following questions to determine whether you’ve found a good mechanic or not.
- What are their affiliations? Are their mechanics registered with the State Automobile Chamber of Commerce? Are they affiliated with the State Motoring Association such as RAC? They might be part of a national chain – good. If they are, it’s not a guarantee of a solid operation, but these associations typically require a certain amount of training for mechanics in order for the business to achieve affiliation. It’s a good place to start.
- Check review sites such as Google Maps to see what people say about the business.
- What is their warranty policy? The longer the better. Is it only on parts, or does it also include labor? And does it extend nation wide?
- Does the mechanic give you options that you can choose from that will save you money? This is a sure sign of an honest mechanic.
- Will they let you watch while they work? Good mechanics aren’t afraid to let you sit nearby to see the quality and speed at which they work.
- Are they friendly, helpful, and not irritated by your questions? A good mechanic typically has an enthusiasm or excitement towards educating their customers about their vehicles. If you’ve run into a jerk who doesn’t want to discuss things with you, go elsewhere.
- Are the staff and premises well presented?
- Did you get a warm and friendly reception? And were you invited to return when next you have need? Did they ask for you to referr them?
- Did they fix your problem?
Did you answer “yes” to all of the above? Then they are certainly worth a second go!
