OMG, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!?

THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT IS ON?!!

 eng light

OMG, what does the light mean? Its dark, wet and freezing. The traffic is horrendous, bumper to bumper. What will I do if the car conks out? I’ll hold up the traffic and they will all blow their horns. Strangers will shout at me!

Alternatively, it is late at night and foggy. It is a lonely stretch of road without street lights. Just me and the baby. What will I do? Will somebody stop to help and can I trust them? Will baby be OK?

Well, what does the light signify?

The Manufacturer’s handbook will probably say to get the car to the Dealer immediately. And this implies something dire and costly. And it might be! However, if the car seems to be running normally, just continue your journey. Get it to your favourite repairer though, as soon as possible. Nowadays most workshops are equipped to handle all the problems in the modern motor vehicle. And usually at a smaller cost.

If, however, the engine stumbles, stutters or changes pitch then pull over as soon as possible. Note the temperature, oil pressure and other warning lights. If those seem normal, switch off, wait a few minutes and re-start. Again, noting the gauges and dash lights and, importantly, the engine sound. If all seems OK, apart from the “engine light”, then proceed cautiously until you reach your favourite repairer.

BUT if things do not seem right ………….. seek help. Find a phone. Ring your automobile association for free roadside assistance or call your favourite repairer – he’ll help! Then let others know you will be late! Then tomorrow join the local Automobile Association.
