The battery light! What the …. ?

Oh crickey! Why is the battery light on?

What does it mean? Am I safe to keep going?

Amongst that bewildering array of instrument warning lights I recognise the battery by the rectangle shape with the little + and – signs. And it’s on and flashing. What should I do?

Firstly, take stock of your situation. Is it day time or night? Are you in a mad hurry? Do you have nervous or vulnerable passengers? Is the location isolated or busy? Are you a member of a roadside help organisation?

Secondly, know that the light indicates the battery is not being charged but there is likely to be sufficient energy in it to get you several kilometres so long as you do not switch the engine off. It might not re-start! To maximise that distance it is important to turn off all accessories to reduce the load on the battery. However, if it is dark you will need the headlights and this will restrict your distance to about (?) 3 km. That may be enough to get you to a safer place.

Of course, if you have roadside membership, call them as soon as you are in a safe place. Then Bob’s your aunty and you’re in good hands. If not a member, ring your Favourite Repairer.

The cause may be as simple as a loose belt or wiring connections and you will soon be on your way. On the other hand, you might be up for a ride in a tow truck – how good is that!

Happy motoring.
