Why does my car blow smoke?
- Is this a sign of something seriously wrong?

Let’s try a couple of questions first on the assumption it is not actually on fire! Like what colour and when does it blow? And is it a diesel or petrol engine and how many kilometers? The colour will indicate which liquid is involved.
White or Grey is most likely steam and if it occurs on first start up it is fairly normal. It arises because the vapours in the exhaust system cool down when the engine is turned off and the water content condenses to a liquid. Starting the engine immediately heats this water. You may have also noticed water dripping from the tail pipe at this time. Not to worry but get the exhaust checked for corrosion. If it is persistent and the engine runs roughly then it’s a blown head gasket. Ouch!
White and lots of it from a diesel engine is raw, unburnt fuel. It indicates that the fuel pump is way out of sync or an injector is wide open or valve timing is out of whack. In any event, it is serious. It might even mean you’ve put petrol in your diesel engine! Get it to your Favourite Repairer ASAP – preferably towed.
Black also says unburnt fuel. If it is petrol vehicle be concerned but not anxious. Your fuel economy has gone to hell and long term damage will occur but just seek a normal appointment with your Favourite Repairer and he will re-tune your engine.
If it is a diesel engine the repair is considerably dearer. It might be just a dirty air filter. Very likely, though, the pump and injectors will need reconditioning. But get to your Favourite Repairer for a diagnosis and estimate.
Blue indicates burning engine oil. Now, if it is only on start-up (and after descending a long hill) then the usual cause is worn valve stem seals, allowing oil to drop into the combustion chambers. No immediate worry but have a yarn to your Favourite Repairer to explore the options. OK, but if it is fairly noticeable all the time then it is worn piston rings. Your engine is now tired OR it has been overheated. Spark plugs are fouled. Performance and fuel consumption has dropped off. Time now for a serious review with your Favourite Repairer.
